Dear Parents and Carers

We have had such an exciting couple of weeks at school, making great progress towards achieving the Gold Artsmark for Palm Bay, which is one of our development targets for this year. Year 5 children were fantastic in their production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, as part of the Shakespeare in Schools project, and they put on a spell-binding performance at the Theatre Royal in Margate. I would like to give special thanks to Miss Hornig for organising and directing, as well as to Mrs Edwards, Vice Chair of Governors and Laura Watson (Lola’s mum) who so generously gave up a lot of their time to help and support.

This week also saw Palm Bay’s first ever Art Auction. Mrs Tong did a wonderful job of organising the event, along with a team of staff who helped her, and I am delighted to say that we raised £2,400 on the night which will go towards funding future Arts projects for the children. Over 70 beautiful artworks were donated for the auction and we are so very grateful for the generosity of our local artists. Thank you also to our governors, many of whom attended and bid for artwork!

The highlight of my week was teaching philosophy to Kestrels class in Year 5. We had a philosophical discussion aiming to answer a question that the children thought of, linked to their topic on space: What is more important – humankind or planet earth? We ended up discussing global warming and the ethics of eating meat and I was so impressed with how articulate and mature the children were. I look forward to do more philosophy across the school. On the theme of caring for our environment, we have just finished ‘Switch off Fortnight’ and our Eco-committee have been busily turning off lights across the school and raising awareness about the importance of reducing carbon emissions. I would like to make a very special mention to one of our parents, Matthew (Holly’s dad) who has kindly given up his spare time this week to clear litter from the front of the school grounds that has blown up from the beach.

Thank you to all of you who attended our parent workshop this week on E-Safety. If you were unable to come, but would like more information, please pop in to the office and ask for a leaflet.

As you know, next Friday is our Christmas fair and I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Miss Williams
